HMH Reading: We will be starting Module 3, “Natural Disasters”. We will read about and explore volcanoes, earthquakes, and hurricanes. In this module we will explore the genres of Informational Text and Narrative Nonfiction. The students will work on big skills such as text structures, author’s craft, and understanding content area words. We will work on language skills such as figurative language, multiple meaning words, and Latin Roots. Students will work on strategies to answer questions with more accuracy.
HMH Writing: This month we will continue to work on our 3rd Module: Persuasive Essays. In this unit, we will learn to produce an essay which we state our claim on a position and support with reasons and evidence. The task will be around writing a persuasive essay connected to natural disasters and the destruction of a town. We will continue to work on foundational writing skills in phonics and grammar.
Envision Math: In Topic 5 we will come back to division. In this unit, we will learn how to use strategies to divide whole numbers of larger values.In Topic 6 we will continue with division. Our focus will be on division with decimals.
Social Studies: We will be continuing the Geography and Early Societies of the Western Hemisphere unit. Throughout the lessons students will be able to address the essential question of “To what degree does geography determine culture?”
Science: We will be wrapping up our Amplify Modeling Matter. In this part of the unit, we will focus on answering the question, what happens when 2 substances are mixed together? We encourage students to create salad dressings that are edible using ingredients at home.
We will also begin to prepare for the New York State Science test by working on topics that align with the expectations of the test. This month we be centering our learning about a mini-unit on Weather and Climate
SEL: Character Theme of the Month: Kindness
Kindness is a way of doing good deeds through having a friendly, considerate, and generous nature. In its simplest form its a way of showing love to the people around you.

Homework: Homework will be given every night. There will be homework for reading and math everyday. The purpose of homework is to reinforce what we learned in school during the day. It is very important to read every night at home. Please be sure to fill out the Reading Log. Each teacher will assign other homework depending on the need of each class.
