PARENT ROLE/ STUDENT CONFERENCES

RESOURCES

We encourage parents to meet regularly with their child’s teacher.

Conferences, scheduled four times throughout the academic school year, are excellent opportunities for you to visit your child's classroom and communicate with your child's teacher. Many of our conferences at PS 280Q follow the Student Led Conference format. During your Student Led Conference, you will have an opportunity to hear from your student about their academic and socio-emotional progress. Students will share work samples and showcase their ability to take accountability for and reflect on their own learning.

It is parent responsibility to attend these conferences with their child. For your convenience, afternoon and evening conferences are scheduled throughout the school year. Please be attentive to flyers/notices that will be sent home with further information.

Aside from conferences, please note that teachers are available to meet throughout the year to discuss your child’s progress. Please be sure to communicate with your child’s teacher for more information. Parents are invited every Tuesday afternoon for Parent Engagement Time, from 2:20pm – 3:00pm, to meet with their child’s teachers. Although no appointment is necessary, please be advised this timeslot is available to all families of our school and appointments can be made during this timeframe.

If an issue should arise that necessitates a discussion with any of your child’s teachers, please send a note to the teacher as soon as possible via your child’s book-bag/College Binder. Teachers will respond in a timely fashion to schedule a phone conference or meeting. Please be aware that teachers are not available for drop-in meetings during the school day as they are in the classroom teaching. If you feel the teacher cannot address your concerns, please contact the Parent Coordinator, via written note or phone call, to further discuss the issue.

Parents are encouraged to be active participants in ensuring that their child completes daily homework. Please check your child’s books daily for important information from the school. If your child needs help with homework, please feel free to call the number on the right.

I HAVE A CONCERN.

WHO DO I ASK? …

P.S. 280Q encourages open dialogue between parents, administrators and teachers. If you wish to express a concern or offer a suggestion about a school-related issue, please adhere to the following:

FIRST: Contact the teacher by sending a note via your child’s College Binder, emailing the teacher or speaking personally to him/her in private. Please do not address the teacher about personal concerns in public areas (e.g. morning arrival and dismissal).

SECOND: If after speaking with the teacher the issue has not been resolved, please contact the Parent Coordinator by stopping by or calling the Family Center at your earliest convenience. You may also leave a message with the main office for the Parent Coordinator.

THIRD: If warranted, an appointment will be scheduled with the Principal and Parent Coordinator to discuss your concern.

*If there is an emergency issue, please visit the main office immediately and any one of our staff members will assist you.
