School Policies and Procedures

We need your commitment to ensure that your child is here for the full day of instruction on a regular basis. Attendance is one of the measures used to determine grade promotion. Make it a goal to achieve 100% attendance. The excessive absence and/or lateness of any student will be investigated and followed up via Department of Education guidelines. Students with excessive absence/lateness risk attaining Promotionin Doubt (PID) status.

Parents whose child is going to be absent should call the school that morning: (718) 424-9031; provide their child’s name and class and provide a brief reason for the absence. When a student is absent, he/she must bring a signed note from the parent upon return to school. Students who have been absent from school for 3 days or longer due to an illness need to bring a note from a doctor stating the reason for their absence. If parents know ahead of time that their child must be out of school, they should please send a note stating which days will be missed and the reason for the upcoming absence.

Extended Vacations

Extended holiday vacations and vacations at times other than the official school breaks are not sanctioned. For unavoidable extended trips due to family illness or a death in the family, advance documentation (a copy of child’s airline ticket and contact information) must be provided to the main office to avoid triggering an automated report to city agencies. To support with continuing your child’s education, any student on an extended vacation will be provided with activities by the classroom teacher to be completed via our schools Remote Learning platform to the best extent possible.

Health

All new students in grades PreK-5 attending New York City public schools must have a complete physical examination. This comprehensive medical examination must be documented by a doctor.

Please note we have a full-time nurse in our school. If your child feels ill or requires any medical attention throughout the school day, he/she will visit the school nurse and you will be informed as soon as possible.

Medicine

Whenever a child must be on long-term medication that needs to be administered during the school day, parents/guardians should obtain the necessary form (504 form). These forms are to be completed and signed by the parent and physician, and returned with the medication to the school's nurse's office.

CHILDREN MAY NOT TRANSPORT MEDICATION TO THE SCHOOL. A PARENT OR GUARDIAN MUST BRING THE MEDICATION TO THE NURSE'S OFFICE WITH THE APPROPRIATE MEDICAL ADMINISTRATION FORM FROM THE PHYSICIAN.

The medication must be sent to school in the original container labeled and dated by the pharmacist or physician and should include: name of student, name of medication, exact dosage to be taken, and time at which dosage is to be taken at school. This medication must be picked up by the parent/ guardian at the end of the school year in June, or it will be discarded.

Allergies

Life-threatening allergy problems (e.g. allergy to bee stings) should be brought to the immediate attention of the principal so that the staff can be trained to administer necessary medication.

Illness

If a child becomes ill at school, we will contact the individuals listed on the student's emergency card/dismissal consent form and follow the protocol indicated on the card. Parents should please make sure that the information on these cards is kept current, and inform the office when changes need to be made.

Head Lice

If a case of head lice is found in a classroom, a letter is sent home to all families in that class with information on checking for lice, removing them, and treating lice infestations at home. Since head lice spreads easily and rapidly, children who have an infestation must be kept home until all lice are completely removed from the hair. A child returning to school must be accompanied by an adult from home, and re-examined by school personnel before they can re-enter class.

Family Center

The Family Center, located on the first floor in room 114, is a welcoming space for all families and students of our school. Housing the Parent Coordinator, please feel free to visit the Family Center to learn more about our school’s events and initiatives, or for general information about P.S. 280Q.

Field Trips

Field Trips are part of the school curriculum and are great ways to engage the students in hands on learning. In order for your child to participate on these field trips, permission slips must be signed by the parent/guardian granting consent. Verbal consent over the phone is NOT allowed. If your child is not permitted to attend a particular trip, you will be notified in advance of the situation and special arrangements will be made for your child in school.

Parent chaperones are expected to support a positive and safe experience for ALL children. In the case of an emergency, this support may include remaining and/or accompanying a child while waiting for their guardian to arrive. If permissible, parents are also encouraged to participate as chaperones during these field trips. However, please be aware that siblings that do not attend our school are not allowed to participate. Please speak with your child’s teacher for further information. Please keep in mind that Parent Volunteers share the responsibility of looking after the entire class, not just their child. Students are expected to remain in school after a field trip.

Some field trips may require a fee to be paid in advance of the trip. If any financial issues are present, please speak with the Parent Coordinator as soon as possible.

Lost and Found

If your child has lost an article of clothing, a lunchbox, notebook or other personal item, please visit the Lost and Found box in the Cafeteria.

Please remember to write your child’s name and class on all personal items. This makes it easier to find. However, please note that all families have access to the Lost and Found box and the school cannot be held responsible for any these items.

Personal Items

PERSONAL ITEMS, TOYS/ GAMES, ELECTRONICS, CELL PHONES

We ask that students NOT bring toys, trading cards, electronic games, or pocket money to school without special permission from the school or teacher.

Please note that as per Chancellor’s Regulations, our students are permitted to have cell phones in school. However, all cell phones MUST remain in the student’s book bag, out of sight and cannot be used during the school day. Students not abiding by these rules will have their cell phones confiscated for parents to pick up.

School supplies

All families will receive list of the supplies necessary to begin the school year. Most of these supplies are considered communal, and are shared with other students of the classroom. Small supplies may be sent in your child’s book bag. Heavy supplies only be accepted during the Meet the Teacher event, during the month of September.

FAMILIES ARE NOT BE PERMITTED TO LEAVE SUPPLIES AT ANY SCHOOL ENTRANCE.
